DANA COWIE STUDIO PORTRAIT

My work focuses on paintings of Hamilton and it’s surrounding area. I walk a lot each day and as the seasons change, so do the colours. I start to see the city as a character. My goal is to achieve a technical, well drawn image with a sense of movement and painterly, expressive brush strokes. As I walk the streets of Hamilton I see compositions. I get most excited when I’m pulled into a commonplace scene such as a street corner with old buildings or a group of people sitting outside. My approach to painting is to build the picture plain using the shapes I see with a range of colours that I layer over each other. Each piece will have a palette shift depending on the weather, the light, and the season. Overlapping colours are very important for creating depth in the work. These remnants of marks poking through give the paintings atmosphere and motion.

This fall I’ve been expanding on my Hamilton area paintings to include figures in the picture plane. Some of the works have a narrative, capturing a moment in life – a simple image of a child gazing at toys and day dreaming, a flower seller in the Locke St. market or a child jumping to pick an apple at Carluke’s. I am also bring elements of my everyday life into my work. Tea things and bits I’ve picked from my garden in a still life and waterfalls. I can’t avoid the beauty of our numerous waterfalls.

I work best when standing up at my easel. Painting in this way is like a dance so it’s best to be able to have motion in my body while I work.
